The Senior Counsel, Litigation will manage the strategic defense of domestic and global claims and litigation. You will provide risk-adjusted advice on a broad range of litigation matters.
You will be agile, highly organized, and have the skills, drive, and flexibility to support and accelerate this leading technology company, addressing cutting-edge legal issues and organizational challenges. This is a full-time position based in Seattle, San Francisco, or Washington, DC, reporting to Databricks' Deputy General Counsel.
This position may be filled at the Counsel or Senior Counsel level, depending on the candidate’s years of experience and skillset.
The impact you will have:
- Oversee outside counsel including management of budgets, directing litigation strategy, reviewing and finalizing pleadings, mediation/arbitration statements, and settlement agreements.
- Actively manage the strategic defense of complex domestic and global claims, arbitrations, mediations and litigation, effectively and within budget.
- Investigate and respond to attorney demand letters and other pre-litigation matters, including communicating with opposing counsel and negotiating resolutions.
- Manage litigation discovery processes including production and trial preparation, use of leading e-discovery tools and protocols and creation of internal discovery process documentation.
- Supporting investigations, including reviewing, revising, and finalizing investigation reports and providing pragmatic advice regarding remedial measures.
- Exercise keen business and legal judgment in advising on litigation matters to a wide range of stakeholders. You know when to say “yes”, “no, unless …”, and “no”, but you also know when to escalate concerns.
- Provide risk-adjusted advice to Databricks' commercial teams and other business partners, including advice on commercial clauses from a litigation context.
- Support litigation-related aspects of mergers, acquisitions, and strategic investments, including due diligence and related integration efforts.
- Build and maintain a global litigation function, including identifying and implementing process improvements that allow the business and the function to scale for growth.
- Assess the business and legal landscape to anticipate potential litigation and disputes and provide proactive advice to the business to mitigate legal risks.
- Support Legal department, team-related, and other business projects as assigned.·
What we look for:
- JD from an accredited institution and licensed to practice law in either California, Washington, or Washington, DC.
- Prior tech sector experience preferred, including cloud services and big data
- 6+ years of litigation/litigation management, investigations, and law experience; law firm and in-house experience required
- 6+ years of experience managing the strategic defense of complex domestic and global claims and litigation effectively and within budget.
- Experience supporting the litigation-related aspects of mergers, acquisitions, and strategic investments, including due diligence and related integration efforts.
- Fluency in translating legal advice into practical, risk-adjusted, business-oriented advice
- Assess quickly the latest situations and develop practical options to respond to and resolve risks
- Strong work ethic
- Great judgment and attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A desire to work on complex legal issues and in new global regions as we continue to grow
- Aptitude and appetite for identifying and developing critical process improvements

The pay range(s) for this role is listed below and represents the expected salary range for non-commissionable roles or on-target earnings for commissionable roles. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to job-related skills, depth of experience, relevant certifications and training, and specific work location. Based on the factors above, Databricks anticipates utilizing the full width of the range. The total compensation package for this position may also include eligibility for annual performance bonus, equity, and the benefits listed above.
