Sr. Developer Advocate, Open Lakehouse

Amsterdam, Netherlands

RDQ226R496

Location: San Francisco, Bellevue, Amsterdam

Role Overview

Are you an active community leader and hands-on builder in the data engineering and AI ecosystem, driven by a desire to foster engagement and empower developers? This Senior Developer Advocate role is a high-impact position focused on the strategic adoption and technical discourse across the Open Lakehouse stack, including Apache Spark™, Delta Lake, MLflow, Unity Catalog, and Apache Iceberg™.

As a crucial link between our engineering teams and the global developer community, you will play a pivotal role in accelerating the careers of data practitioners by translating best practices into scalable, production-ready reference implementations and high-quality educational content. You will operate as the trusted voice championing developer success, guiding them to master the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform and its open source foundations.

The Impact You Will Have

You will leverage your technical depth, content creation skills, and community engagement to drive awareness and adoption, positioning the Open Lakehouse as the definitive architecture for modern data and AI.

  • Content Execution and Delivery: Define, develop, and maintain high-quality, actionable educational resources, including deep-dive tutorials, advanced technical blogs, and live-coding demonstrations that showcase core open source features and thought leadership (e.g., Delta Lake time travel, Spark performance tuning).
  • Evangelism: Create and deploy practical code samples and compelling reference demos that showcase best practices for ETL, data governance, and analytics, effectively integrating the OSS ecosystem with cutting-edge AI tools (e.g., setting up training data on Delta Lake or connecting agents to Unity Catalog functions).
  • Community Leadership and Advocacy: Actively lead and grow technical communities and meetups. Connect with developers where they are at, and become their primary internal advocate to engineering and product teams, and align the product roadmap with developer needs.
  • Open Source Contribution: Directly participate in open source communities by filing detailed bug reports, submitting small pull requests, and providing clear, actionable feedback on new features for projects like Delta Lake, MLflow, or Apache Iceberg™.
  • Evangelism: Deliver engaging, high-value presentations at local user groups, regional, and industry events on complex topics like data format interoperability, ETL best practices, and the application of AI Agentic Systems across the data development workflow.

What We Look For

We are seeking a seasoned practitioner with deep technical proficiency, a verifiable track record in community leadership, and genuine empathy for the developer journey.

  • Experience and Tenure: 5+ years of total technical experience, including professional experience as a software developer, data engineer, or solutions architect, with a proven history of building and operating data workloads.
  • Deep Technical Proficiency: Expert-level programming skills in Python, SQL, and Java.
  • Lakehouse Ecosystem Mastery: Foundational understanding of the core Open Lakehouse technologies, including Apache Spark™, Delta Lake, Apache Iceberg™, Unity Catalog, and MLflow.
  • Verifiable Open Source Track Record: Demonstrated ability to build and operate data workloads using core Open Lakehouse technologies, with hands-on experience in the open source contribution workflow (filing issues, small PRs).
  • Communication and Empathy: Exceptional communication skills with a proven talent for translating complex technical concepts into clear, concise educational material for a broad developer audience. A public portfolio showing high-quality content creation (e.g., detailed tutorials, well-received conference talks, or active community contributions) is a significant advantage.
