The annual Data Team Awards showcase how different enterprise data teams are delivering solutions to some of the world’s toughest problems.

Nearly 300 nominations were submitted by companies from diverse industries and regions across six categories. Each of these organizations has displayed remarkable innovation in their data and AI initiatives, and we want to help tell those stories. As we approach the Data + AI Summit, we will highlight each category's finalists in the coming days.

The Data Team Democratization Award recognizes data teams empowering their entire organization to securely access data, analytics and AI when and how they need it with fully managed governance — making every team a data team..

Below are the finalists for 2023’s Democratization Award:

Barilla

For Barilla Group, an Italian food Company with diversified food products made in 29 factories and distributed across more than 100 countries, building an efficient operation is no simple task. The goal of Barilla's IT Data & Analytics team was to create business value from the data collected across these areas and make it available for all functions within the entire organization. Data democratization with Databricks Lakehouse has helped Barilla do just that, the company leveraging both historical and predictive data insights to solve a range of challenges and optimize daily activities. Analysts can monitor shipments overseas in near real-time, predict demand and adjust production to improve inventory management. Marketers can understand customer behavior in different countries and identify new market segments to drive more revenue opportunities. Manufacturing can extract and allocate industrial costs and quantify plant losses, and can also better predict when a machine is likely to fail and schedule maintenance windows proactively. And it’s all being done with managed role-based access with Unity Catalog to easily discover, understand and use data more securely through catalogs of data assets that are discoverable and traceable. From finance to marketing, to manufacturing and to supply chain, Barilla Group will strategically lever on Data, Advanced Analytics and Artificial Intelligence to accelerate innovation and enable a long term sustainable business growth.

With more than 35,000 electric vehicles (EV) produced, Rivian is turning a vision of the future of sustainable adventure into a reality. The Delta Lake helps capture terabytes of data every day from the sensors and controllers of Rivian vehicles – everything from driving performance information to how parts function. For Rivian’s data team, their success relies on harnessing all that data and turning it into insight as fast as possible, which can then be rolled into software feature updates that increase reliability and improve driving experiences. The team at Rivian has built a data-driven culture that flows throughout the company, with both technical and business teams using Databricks Lakehouse to explore data and extract actionable product insights via visual dashboards powered by DatabricksSQL. With Unity Catalog, they have centralized data catalog and access management across teams and workspaces with full lineage, which has simplified yet robust governance and data sharing. End-to-end version controlled governance and auditability of sensitive data sources, like the ones used for autonomous driving systems, produces a simple but secure solution for feature engineering. Rivian has seen usage of Databricks grow from 5 to 250 team members in just a year — putting Rivian in place to continue to deliver on its mission for a more sustainable future.
