  • Public and private sector organisations are turning to artificial intelligence to increase productivity and bring new innovations to market
  • Databricks to upskill over 100 NSW public sector staff in AI and data analytics

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, March 27, 2025 — Databricks, the Data and AI company, today announced its strong momentum in the Australia & New Zealand (ANZ) market continues, with unrelenting demand for data and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities across Australian enterprises and public sector organisations. Databricks has kept up with this growth by investing in ANZ headcount, and projects to grow the team to more than 200 employees in the region by year-end. This growth in headcount includes an expansion of the field engineering team, which consists of solution architects to implement and support ANZ customers’ data and AI projects.

Launch of new Data and AI Academy for NSW State Government
In addition to its work with private sector companies, the business has established Data and AI Academy programmes with both the Queensland and NSW State Governments, which will see more than 100 staff in each government upskilled on data analytics and AI to uplift capability in the public sector. Once users have completed the training programmes, they will obtain Databricks certification and accreditation, and be able to train their colleagues, which will better empower public sector staff to confidently leverage the suite of capabilities on the Databricks Intelligence Platform.

Databricks also experienced significant growth in new ANZ customers, including Airwallex, Austroads, Children’s Cancer Institute and Zip Co, while increasing the number of ANZ-based partners it works with to over 200.

“I’m constantly amazed by the strong ecosystem of customers and partners in ANZ, who are investing in data intelligence and impactful AI use cases that drive innovation in this region,” said Adam Beavis, Vice President and Country Manager for Databricks in ANZ. “There’s no doubt there was a learning curve with data intelligence when AI burst into the scene, but we’re now seeing a real maturity from ANZ organisations where they are bringing to market AI projects and innovations that are globally best in class.”

Timothy Wong, VP of Data and AI at global fintech Airwallex said, “We are set to adopt Databricks as the foundation for our data and AI workload, from customer-facing dashboards and internal self-serve analytics using AI within the company. We anticipate that AI, when used the right way, will be a game changer for modern businesses. As Airwallex continues to scale globally, we will continue to explore data and AI capabilities to make our product more intuitive and deliver greater value for our customers.”

The momentum in the ANZ region follows Databricks’ recent announcement of US$15 billion in financing, including the Series J funding which attracted investment from entities administered by Australia’s Macquarie Capital, Meta, QIA, the sovereign wealth fund of Qatar, and Temasek. This fundraising round values the company at US$62 billion.

Globally the firm is growing 60% year on year and has crossed US$3 billion revenue run-rate in the fourth quarter ending January 31, 2025. Databricks has continued to strengthen its existing offerings with a number of acquisitions in the last year. Some of these include BladeBridge, to streamline data warehouse migrations for enterprises; and Tabular, to bring data and format compatibility to the lakehouse.

In addition to these acquisitions, ANZ enterprises and public sector organisations can benefit from recent partnerships including with SAP to unify the most important business data in SAP with the Databricks platform for data warehousing, data engineering, and AI all governed by Databricks Unity Catalog, as well as another with Palantir, which combines Palantir's world-class AI operating system and Databricks’ leading platform for AI, data warehousing, and data engineering.

Databricks’ ANZ event roadshow
The ANZ momentum was announced at the Sydney Data Intelligence Day, a flagship event roadshow that kicked off in Melbourne on 19 March. Bringing together a community of Australia’s top technology and AI leaders, including Bupa, the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning, and Seven West Media, the event shared best practices and learnings attendees can use to deliver more success with their data and AI initiatives.
