Databricks Community Edition FAQ

The Databricks Community Edition is hosted on Amazon Web Services. However, you do not incur AWS costs when you use the Databricks Community Edition.

The Databricks Community Edition is free of charge. You do not pay for the platform nor do you incur AWS costs.

The Databricks Community Edition notebooks are compatible with IPython notebooks. You can easily import your existing IPython notebooks into the Databricks Community Edition notebook environment.

All users can share and host their notebooks free of charge with Databricks. We hope this will enable everyone to create new and exciting content that will benefit the entire Apache Spark community.

Databricks Community Edition users can get more capacity and gain production-grade functionalities by upgrading their subscription to the full Databricks platform. To upgrade, sign-up for a 14-day free trial or contact us.

With the Databricks Community Edition, the users will have access to 15GB clusters, a cluster manager and the notebook environment to prototype simple applications, and JDBC / ODBC integrations for BI analysis. The Databricks Community Edition access is not time-limited and users will not incur AWS costs for their cluster usage.

The full Databricks platform offers production-grade functionality, such as an unlimited number of clusters that easily scale up or down, a job launcher, collaboration, advanced security controls, and expert support. It helps users process data at scale, or build Apache Spark applications in a team setting.

You do not need to persist in Databricks’ AWS account. In most cases your data can be accessed from its current location on S3 or other data sources.
