We’re thrilled to announce the General Availability (GA) of Databricks Clean Rooms on AWS and Azure, a significant step forward in enabling secure, privacy-centric data collaboration. Following the Public Preview launch in August, we've engaged closely with customers and partners to enhance and refine the Clean Rooms, integrating new functionalities that cater to a wide array of industry requirements, including those in advertising, healthcare, financial services, and retail.

In the GA release, users can expect enhanced features that improve data governance and privacy controls, enabling organizations to securely collaborate without compromising sensitive information.

Leading companies such as Mastercard, Intuit and AppsFlyer have already begun using Databricks Clean Rooms within their respective sectors, including financial services, healthcare, and advertising. We encourage you to explore the latest advancements and learn how they can empower your data strategies.

What is Databricks Clean Rooms?

Databricks Clean Rooms is powered by Delta Sharing and allows businesses to easily collaborate with their customers and partners on any cloud without compromising privacy or sharing sensitive data. Participants in a clean room can securely share and join their existing data, and run complex workloads using any language — such as Python, which provides native support for ML. When collaborating in a clean room, your data stays in place and you are always in control of where and how the data is being used.

What’s New in GA?

With this release, Databricks Clean Rooms introduces several new capabilities designed to enhance collaboration, security, and compliance:

  • Output Tables: Generate and share approved analytical outputs directly in Unity Catalog, enabling downstream workflows while maintaining strict privacy controls.
  • HIPAA Compliance: Clean Rooms now offers HIPAA compliance features, making them an ideal solution for healthcare organizations processing sensitive patient data. This enhancement opens up new possibilities for secure collaboration in healthcare, fostering innovation while protecting patient privacy.
  • Management APIs: New APIs have been introduced to automate clean room setup, orchestration, and monitoring. These powerful tools enable efficient scaling across multiple collaborators and use cases, reducing administrative overhead and accelerating time-to-insight.
  • Self-Collaboration: Create clean rooms within a single metastore, enabling collaboration between users from the same metastore or even with yourself. This is a great option for customers who want to try the clean room product within their own organization before collaborating with external parties. This feature also provides flexibility for internal data sharing and analysis, streamlining workflows within organizations.
  • Federated Sharing (Preview): Take advantage of the new query federation feature to seamlessly collaborate with partners across clouds and data platforms without needing to replicate or migrate all the data.

These enhancements collectively represent a significant leap in empowering organizations to unlock the full potential of data collaborations with their partners and customers, while maintaining the highest standards of privacy and security.

Demo: Privacy-Centric Collaboration in Action

Our latest demo showcases how two banks collaborate on a joint fraud detection initiative using a data clean room to identify suspicious transaction patterns and potential fraudsters. The demo illustrates how users can securely bring their data and fraud detection models from various sources, including Snowflake, into the clean room. The banks then run agreed-upon analytics and share approved results, all while maintaining robust data governance and compliance.

Customer Momentum: Real-World Impact

Several customers have already begun leveraging Databricks Clean Rooms to solve complex challenges.

Mastercard Leads the Way in Privacy-First Data Collaboration

Mastercard operates in 210 countries and territories with 3.5 billion cards in circulation.

The tech company’s pedigree lies in delivering trust to its customers and partners, which is why Mastercard has been using Privacy Enhancement Technology (PETs) to power utility from data while ensuring compliance. As the next step to the company’s commitment to data responsibility principles, Mastercard closely partnered with Databricks to create a unique privacy-enhancing offering using Databricks Clean Room capabilities.

The use of PETs and Mastercard controls within this clean room offering has allowed Mastercard to dynamically and innovatively govern privacy and confidentiality capabilities based on collaborators, regionality, data types and specific use cases.

“Trust is the foundation of everything we do. Our partnership with Databricks Clean Rooms to create a unique privacy-enhancing offering upholds our data and tech responsibility principles, unlocking valuable insights for our customers and partners. At Mastercard, data is at the heart of our products and services, and we believe that responsible data innovation is essential to move society forward in meaningful ways.”
